French designer Alexandre Noll perceived the creation of furniture to be a true art form, and rarely made an object in a series. His unique approach to furniture making and sculpture parallels his interest in the originality of relationship between humans and nature. Using natural materials and biomorphic forms, Noll blurred the line between furniture and sculpture, and revealed the organic continuity in all objects, whether functional or aesthetic. A recluse and reticent man by nature, Noll turned down a teaching position at the Ecole Boule, Paris’ famous school of furniture making, saying that he preferred to keep his methods a secret. Both Nakashima and Noll had a spiritual relationship to wood and the trees from which they came. To them, the tree represented both a natural thing and an intellectual idea, and it possessed both a use value and a philosophical value.

Sculpteur sur bois de formation, il crée des meubles uniques façonnés en taille directe dans différentes essences de bois massif. Il acquiert une science intuitive du bois, un poli unique, l’utilisation opportune de ses veines et une maîtrise naturelle des courbes et des volumes. Dès 1925, il expose ses recherches à l’Exposition Internationale des Arts décoratifs et au Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.
En 1937, il présente lors de l’Exposition Internationale des vases, pichets et plats creusés en plein bois et polis.
Son inspiration naît d’une utopie pré-écologiste. L’aventure du mobilier débute pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. Tables, chaises, fauteuils, bars et buffets sont taillés dans la masse, grossièrement équarrie. Ils seront présentées à la Compagnie des Arts Français en 1943. Il se dégage de ses inventions une formidable puissance créative et une imagination fertile. Dans les années 50, il se lance dans la sculpture. Il expose en 1964 à la galerie La Demeure, en 1966 à la galerie de Messine à Paris et disparaît quatre ans plus tard.
