Patrick Seguin, member of the Compagnie Nationale des Experts, is a prominent figure in the world of 20th Century Design. 

Installed in a magnificent gallery of 300 m2 in Paris’ Bastille neighborhood since 1989, Patrick Seguin has, thanks to a passionate enthousiasm and an energetic determination, defended internationally the talent of designers characteristic of France’s post-World-War II era.  The designers in the gallery’s repertoire include Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Royère.

With a reputation based on seriousness and professionalism, it is not surprising that renowned museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil-am-Rhein, the Kunstverein in Ludwigsburg, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Nancy, to name a few, have solicited the collaboration of Patrick Seguin for the realization of exhibitions. 

The quality of the works selected by Patrick Seguin, as well as his impeccable instinct for their scenography, has given fruit to ground breaking exhibitions such as the “Jean Prouvé” Retrospective at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York in 2003, the “Charlotte Perriand—Jean Prouvé” exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles in 2004, the “Jean Prouvé” exhibition in Seoul and in Tokyo in 2005, and an exhibition dedicated to the furniture of Pierre Jeanneret for the city of Chandigarh in India at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York in Feburary 2006. 

It is the following criteria that justifies the role of the Galerie Patrick Seguin as representative of the designs of France’s 1950’s at the prestigious Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, at the Biennale des Antiquaires in Monaco, and at Design Miami and Design Miami Basel.

Today the work of Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Royère, Le Corbusier, Serge Mouille, Georges Jouve and Alexandre Noll is considered to be an essential component of the history of 20th Century Design.

The 1950’s in France was a period of renaissance after the crisis of the War and the Occupation in the 30’s and 40’s.  This epoch saw the growth and refinement of design in terms of experimentation and quality, thanks to technological and scientific developments, and thanks to the generous support of public sources, who set out to promulgate French creation on an international level. 

The furniture of this epoch, determined by interior spaces, develops in tandem with the modernist principles of an “art of living” and a “harmonious habitat” that are characteristic of the time.  Furthermore, this rationalization on the level of design also becomes characteristic of the work of architects and interior designers such as Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, and Jean Royère, all of whose work contributed to the oeuvre of French Post-War Design.  

Expert auprès de la Compagnie Nationale des Experts, Patrick Seguin est une des figures incontournables du marché du design du XX° siècle. Installé depuis 1989 dans le quartier de la Bastille dans un espace de 300 mètres carrés, il a su par son enthousiasme, faire découvrir et promouvoir à une échelle internationale le talent de créateurs français tels que : Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret et Jean Royère.

La rigueur et le professionnalisme qui ont fait sa réputation, lui ont valu d’être sollicité par les musées les plus renommés pour contribuer à des expositions, notamment : le Centre Pompidou à Paris, le MOMA à New York, le Vitra Design Museum à Weil-am-Rhein, le Musée des Beaux Arts de Nancy ...

Le caractère d’exception des pièces sélectionnées par Patrick Seguin a donné lieu à des expositions inédites à l’invitation de grandes galeries internationales, notamment : une rétrospective « Jean Prouvé »à la Galerie Sonnabend à New York en 2003, une exposition « Charlotte Perriand-Jean Prouvé » à la Galerie Gagosian à Los Angeles en 2004, une exposition « Jean Prouvé » à Séoul puis à Tokyo en 2005. En 2006 une exposition à la Galerie Sonnabend présentant le mobilier inédit créé par Pierre Jeanneret et Le Corbusier à Chandigarh et en 2008 une exposition de Jean Royère à la Galerie Sonnabend à New York réunissant les pièces phares du créateur.

Cette démarche rigoureuse a permis à la Galerie Patrick Seguin de représenter la création des années 50 à la prestigieuse Biennale des Antiquaires de Paris, à la Biennale des Antiquaires de Monaco, à Design Miami et à Design Miami Basel.

Les créations de Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand,Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Royère, sont aujourd’hui reconnues comme autant de contributions majeures à l’histoire du Design du XX° siècle. Après la crise des années 1930, la guerre et l’Occupation, les années 1950 correspondent à une sorte de renaissance. Une création foisonnante et de qualité s’impose grâce au soutien des pouvoirs publics qui entendent défendre le rayonnement international de l’artisanat français, mais surtout grâce aux innovations techniques et scientifiques.

La conception du mobilier est dorénavant conditionnée par de nouveaux espaces intérieurs (notamment par la configuration des logements de ville construits après guerre ), développant l’idée d’un ‘’Art d’habiter’’, ou d’une ‘’harmonie d’habitat’’. Cette rationalisation de la création est au cœur des priorités des architectes et des décorateurs tels que Jean Prouvé,Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret et Jean Royère dont les créations vont largement contribuer à l’essor du mobilier français de l’époque.

Parallèlement à une programmation régulière de deux expositions consacrées chaque année au mobilier ou aux éléments d'architectures conçus par ces créateurs, la Galerie Patrick Seguin mène une politique d'invitation auprès de grandes galeries d'art contemporain internationales. Ces dernières présentent dans l'espace de la galerie Patrick Seguin à Paris des expositions monographiques ou thématiques.

Après la Galerie Jablonka en 2002, la galerie Hauser & Wirth en 2006, et l'exposition personnelle de Richard Prince avec la Galerie Gagosian en 2008, c'est la Galerie Eva Presenhuber qui investira l'espace de la galerie Patrick Seguin au moment de la FIAC 2009.
