In my mind they are indissociable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jean Prouv\u00e9, L\u2019Avenir des structures<br \/>\nRecherche et architecture, No. 16, 1973<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p>A testament to the close relationship between architecture and design, <strong>JEAN PROUV\u00c9<\/strong>\u2019s facade panels are characterized by being lightweight, by enabling a flexibility of composition, and by their finely crafted finish.<br \/>\nManufactured by <strong>ATELIERS JEAN PROUV\u00c9<\/strong> until 1953, these architectural components are designed to be incorporated into prefabricated constructions and quickly assembled on site. Forming the link between the interior and the exterior, they can also be equipped with elements to enhance comfort, such as ventilation systems or porthole windows.<\/p>\n<p>Convinced of their potential on the building components market, Jean Prouv\u00e9 included his panels in a catalogue of standard models from 1936 on, envisaging mass production for a variety of applications. Initially made in wood and steel, it was in aluminum that hopes for a real industrial production lay. With his Max\u00e9ville workshops, Jean Prouv\u00e9 embarked on an ambitious project to transform the construction process for buildings, replacing artisanal construction with an industrial process.<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><strong>ALUMINUM PANEL WITH PORTHOLES<br \/>\nFROM A METROPOLE HOUSE, 1950<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/panel-with-portholes-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/panel-with-portholes-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1333\" height=\"2000\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19735\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/gallery-view-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/gallery-view-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19736\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Developed in 1949 for the prototype of the Tropique house, the porthole panel was used as one of the main construction components for the so-called M\u00e9tropole houses designed in the same year. Entirely prefabricated with a steel structure and aluminum body, a few examples of these houses were initially produced by hand in Max\u00e9ville.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividual, lightweight and dynamic\u201d, the M\u00e9tropole house was characterized by the quality of its construction<br \/>\nelements, among which were the porthole panels. Once assembled, they are noteworthy in their isothermal and acoustic efficiency. The transition between inside and outside is managed by the addition of the portholes to admit daylight.<\/p>\n<p>In 1950, despite the public\u2019s enthusiastic reception at the Salon des Arts M\u00e9nagers not resulting in a single order,<br \/>\nthe government\u2019s proposal to show one or several examples of the M\u00e9tropole house at the \u201cSynth\u00e8se des Arts Majeurs\u201d exhibition initiated by Le Corbusier, says a lot about the very special place this production was to hold in the history of modern architecture.<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><strong>WOOD AND ALUMINUM PANEL WITH PORTHOLES<br \/>\nFROM THE BOUQUEVAL SCHOOL, 1950<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/bouqueval.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/bouqueval.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1333\" height=\"2000\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19739\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/bouqueval-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/bouqueval-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1335\" height=\"2000\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19741\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Characterized by a lack of infrastructure, from schools to hospitals, via housing, the period of post-War reconstruction gave rise to the creation of a range of prefabricated architecture incorporating facade panels.<br \/>\nTaking part in a competition organized by the ministry of Education in 1949, Jean Prouv\u00e9 designed a rural school whose components could be mass produced.<br \/>\nThe constructor saw this brief as an opportunity to initiate a process of industrial production of economical constructions, suitable for several types of application.<\/p>\n<p>In 1950, the government commissioned two prototype ensembles, one in Bouqueval in the Paris area, the other in Vantoux near Metz in eastern France. This commission enabled Jean Prouv\u00e9 to perfect a previously developed process that had already proved its worth: a metal framework with axial portal frames, combined with different types of facade panels clad in aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the success of the demonstration, these two schools remained the only examples ever made of the mass production so ardently hoped for by Jean Prouv\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/en-collection-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.patrickseguin.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/en-collection-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1462\" height=\"2000\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19742\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In their ingenious constructive system and the resulting aesthetic simplicity, the facade panels are historic pieces.<br \/>\nEpitomizing the visionary and resolutely modern mind of the \u2018constructor&#8217;, they blend elegantly into contemporary interiors, where they take on a sculptural dimension.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhile composing a structure I\u2019ve never felt that I was developing a technique for architecture.
