In response to the government’s drive to alleviate the housing crisis, Jean Prouvé, backed by Aluminium Français, designed a “lightweight and dynamic house, an exponent of mass production, therefore characteristic of industry.”
Entirely demountable, this prefabricated architecture with steel structure and aluminum cladding makes full use of the adaptability offered by the axial portal frame system patented by Prouvé in 1939. But in spite of its ingenuity, the Métropole house never won a single order.
