Responding to the government’s drive to meet the crisis by encouraging the industrialized production of economical housing based on new concepts, Jean Prouvé designed, with the support of Aluminium Français, a “lightweight and dynamic house, the product of repetitive production, which is characteristic of industry”. Entirely prefabricated, with a steel structure and aluminum envelope, and making full use of the adaptability offered by the axial portal frame system, the Metropole house nonetheless did not receive a single order.
